Last year I started making things from recycled coffee sacks. I liked the idea of reuse rather than land-filling perfectly useful material, and the whole concept of upcycling was quite intriguing. I decided to give it a try. Next thing I knew I had a small cottage business making messenger bags, tote bags and other burlap inspired products.
A few weekends ago, I experimented some more. Inspired by Swiss design studio Bernhard Burkard‘s deck chair, I created my own version of a Java Jayne sling chair. After a lot of guessing measurements, estimating seat depths and dowel placement, I think I’ve come up with a decent prototype.
I may still make some changes to allow for adjustable seat depths and height but for now, I’m pleased with my first attempt.
In warm weather, I think they’d make perfect outdoor café seating for coffee shops with limited seating. Heck, I may just make a few for my own back deck.
What do you think?
